Channel A's new K-drama, Dive into You, has premiered its first episode, presenting a premise as risky as it is compelling: what would happen if the person you love dies because of you and you are given a second chance to save them, but only by swapping your soul with your twin brother's? The series stars Kim Ji Yeon, known as Bona from WJSN, as Yoon Ha Na; Jang Se Hyuk as her twin brother, Yoon Ha Ru; and Park Seo Ham as Jung Woo Jae, the man both twins are trying to save.
Below is a review of the first impressions of the premiere episode of Dive into You, with a spoiler warning for those who haven't seen it yet.
How Dive into You Begins
The first episode of Dive into You starts in 2010, with Yoon Ha Na filming two high school students competing in judo with a video camera: her twin brother, Yoon Ha Ru, and his friend, Jung Woo Jae. Yoon Ha Ru wins the gold medal and boasts about his victory to Jung Woo Jae, who takes it in stride.
The plot then jumps to the present, where Yoon Ha Ru has become an international-level judoka, so charismatic that he is treated almost like an idol within the circuit. During a speech, he mentions that he considers Jung Woo Jae an even better judoka than himself. However, the surprise comes when it is revealed that Jung Woo Jae no longer practices judo: in 2026, he works as a bodyguard.
For her part, Yoon Ha Na is introduced as a successful actress who, despite her experience and good standing in the industry, is going through an acting crisis that has affected her career.
The Twist That Changes Everything
The story progresses normally until Yoon Ha Na attends an awards gala accompanied by her bodyguard, who is none other than Jung Woo Jae. That night she wins an important award, making it one of the best evenings of her career. Shortly after, while returning to her room with Jung Woo Jae, a stalker attacks her. Jung Woo Jae protects her, but is stabbed and dies on the spot.
Devastated by the loss of their lifelong friend, Yoon Ha Na and Yoon Ha Ru are traveling together in a car when they suffer an accident and fall into the water. Immediately, both siblings are transported back to 2010.
Now they have the chance to change the past and save Jung Woo Jae's life. But there is a catch: Yoon Ha Na's soul has ended up in Yoon Ha Ru's body, while Yoon Ha Ru's soul has ended up in Yoon Ha Na's body.
The Mystery Behind the Plot
One of the strengths of Dive into You is the mystery surrounding its plot. From the first episode, it is revealed that Yoon Ha Na's acting crisis and her inability to cry in emotional scenes are due to a condition that the show's doctors call emotional numbness. As explained, her emotional signals take longer than normal to register in her brain, which causes her to maintain an almost expressionless face constantly and prevents her from reacting to emotional stimuli as an actress of her caliber would.
What is especially intriguing for the audience is discovering what exactly led Yoon Ha Na to become a shadow of her former self. Similarly, another of the great questions of the plot is the identity of the man who attacked Yoon Ha Na and ended up killing Jung Woo Jae, as well as the reason for his hatred toward the protagonist.
Romance, Confusion, and an Impossible Triangle
With the initial mystery resolved, what remains is pure chaos. Yoon Ha Na has been in love with Jung Woo Jae for years, but has never confessed her feelings. Jung Woo Jae, for his part, is also in love with her, although he has never told her either.
The fun begins when, after the soul swap, both twins are sent to the past: the Yoon Ha Na who used to get nervous around Jung Woo Jae because of her crush now behaves in a completely close and carefree way with him, since it is actually Yoon Ha Ru inhabiting her body.
The audience knows that inside Yoon Ha Na's body is the soul of Yoon Ha Ru, but Jung Woo Jae has no idea. This situation promises obvious comedic moments, in addition to posing an intriguing question: if Jung Woo Jae falls in love with Yoon Ha Na while the soul of Yoon Ha Ru occupies her body, who is he really falling in love with? And if, on the contrary, he falls in love with the body of Yoon Ha Ru—which actually contains the soul of Yoon Ha Na—to whom has he truly given his feelings?
First Impressions of Dive into You
Overall, Dive into You is the type of drama that combines a little bit of everything: romance, time travel, body swapping, mystery, and comedy, with two siblings whose only apparent mission is to travel to the past to save their best friend before he dies. Considering the chaos generated by Yoon Ha Na being inside Yoon Ha Ru's body, and vice versa, nothing indicates that their plan will go as expected.
For those who enjoy K-dramas with romance, mystery, time travel, and characters who constantly get into hilarious situations, Dive into You is a proposal worth following.
