The origins of Naked Eyes
Naked Eyes was formed in 1982 by Peter Byrne and keyboardist Rob Fisher, friends since their youth in Bath, England. The two had played together in a band called Neon between 1979 and 1982, which also included Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, who would later form Tears for Fears.
In just two years, Naked Eyes managed to place four singles in the Top 40 of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The most successful was Always Something There to Remind Me, which reached number 8 in the summer of 1983. It was a cover of the original 1963 song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick. The demo recorded by Byrne and Fisher of this track convinced EMI Records to sign the duo who would go on to form Naked Eyes.
Promises, Promises and the debut album
The group had three other Top 40 singles, the most notable being Promises, Promises, written by Byrne and Fisher. This song should not be confused with the Bacharach and David track of the same name, which was also a hit for Dionne Warwick. Both songs were included on the band's debut album, Burning Bridges, released in 1983, which also featured the lesser-known single When the Lights Go Out.
The band's second album, Fuel For The Fire, released in 1984, included the modest hit (What) In the Name of Love, but failed to replicate the commercial impact of the debut record. Shortly after, Naked Eyes disbanded without ever having toured. Rob Fisher died in 1999, at age 42, following surgery related to cancer.

Peter Byrne was born on June 9, 1952, in Bath, England. After Fisher's death, he continued writing, recording and performing solo. In 2001 he released the album The Real Illusion under the name Pete Byrne, and later put out two albums under the name Naked Eyes: Fumbling with the Covers in 2007 and Disguise the Limit in 2021. In 2025, a remastered version of the band's self-titled debut album was released.
In 2008, the Naked Eyes lineup led by Byrne took part in the U.S. Regeneration tour alongside Belinda Carlisle, ABC and The Human League. In 2024, he joined another themed 1980s music tour across the United States and Canada, sharing the bill with Wang Chung, Men Without Hats and The Motels.
Beyond Naked Eyes, Byrne collaborated with Stevie Wonder, providing backing vocals on the 1985 hit Part-Time Lover, and also worked as a composer for film and television. In 1993 he wrote the song I Am The Cute One for the Olsen twins.
