Spanish cinema sweeps October with over 60% of the box office in Spain

Spanish cinema is enjoying a sweet moment in theaters. The first weekend of October has once again confirmed that domestic product is currently the main driver of cinema attendance in Spain, with a market share that has exceeded 60 percent.

Between October 2 and 4, the country's twenty highest-grossing titles brought in more than 10.5 million euros and drew nearly 1.4 million spectators. This marks the third-best weekend of the year, with figures very similar to the previous period.

The box office fell by just 1.6 percent, about 174,000 euros less, while attendance dropped by around 10,000 spectators. A minimal adjustment that confirms the stability of an autumn that is proving especially favorable for film exhibition in Spain.

Why this data is relevant now

The historical context helps to understand the magnitude of the current moment. A year ago, on the weekend of September 26 to 28, 2025, the Top 20 grossed nearly 3.6 million euros, almost 12 percent less than the previous weekend.

In 2024, between September 27 and 29, the figure was nearly 3.5 million euros, with 480,600 spectators, which represented a 14.21 percent drop compared to the previous week. And in 2023, the weekend before the Fiesta del Cine brought in more than 3.6 million euros and 511,244 spectators.

Compared to those records, the start of October 2026 practically triples the box office of previous years on similar dates, a fact that underscores the extraordinary appeal that Spanish cinema has been having in recent months.

La bola negra, the undisputed driver of the box office

If there is one clear person responsible for this boom, it is Los Javis. Their film La bola negra, produced by Elastica and starring Guitarricadelafuente, went from 408 to 432 theaters in its second week on the marquee and saw its box office jump by 24 percent.

The film neared six million euros and added 788,000 spectators just between Friday and Sunday, with an average per theater of 13,866 euros, an extraordinary figure for the current market.

Overall, La bola negra has already surpassed 15 million euros and two million spectators, consolidating itself as the second highest-grossing Spanish film of 2026. It is not ruled out that it could end the year as the leader, surpassing the more than 28 million euros achieved by Torrente, el presidente.

Brad Pitt and Resident Evil remain strong

En el corazón de la bestia, from Paramount, climbed one position in the ranking despite losing 21 percent of its revenue. The film starring Brad Pitt added another million euros in Spain, showing in 347 theaters, with an average of 3,042 euros per screen.

Since its release on September 25, the adventure film has accumulated more than 3.1 million euros and 443,723 spectators in Spanish territory.

For its part, Resident Evil, from Sony Pictures, also gained a spot in its third weekend on the marquee. The film based on the video game achieved 745,000 euros and 94,500 spectators in 301 theaters, with an average of 2,475 euros per screen. In total, it has already accumulated more than 5.5 million euros and 750,600 spectators in Spain.

The weekend’s new releases

The first major new entry in the ranking arrived in fourth position. This is Verity. La sombra de un engaño, from Amazon, which in its first three days grossed 690,000 euros in 299 theaters, with 90,000 spectators and an average of 2,306 euros per screen.

La isla olvidada, from Universal, maintained its fifth place with 345,000 euros and 47,500 spectators in its second weekend, now in 295 theaters. The animated film is approaching one million euros in Spain, with 127,700 tickets sold since its release.

Digger, from Warner Bros., debuted in sixth place with 334 theaters, 321,422 euros, 41,749 spectators, and an average of 962 euros per screen.

Further down the list, La leyenda de la ballena cantora, distributed by Vercine, started in sixteenth position with 88 theaters, 22,800 euros, and 3,200 spectators.

The last two releases of the weekend were the Spanish black comedy Nuda propiedad, from Cinemaran, with 19,800 euros in 73 theaters, and Lucky Strike, from Vértice, with 19,555 euros in 79 theaters.

Spanish cinema, the absolute protagonist

Beyond the La bola negra phenomenon, national cinema dominates the landscape with five titles present in the Top 20, which add up to a combined box office of 6.4 million euros and a market share of 60.76 percent.

Along with La bola negra and Nuda propiedad, the list is completed by Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa, from Paramount, in ninth position with 266,300 euros and a total of 7.5 million euros after six weeks on the marquee.

Also appearing is El ser querido, from A Contracorriente Films, which falls to twelfth position in its sixth weekend with 74,700 euros, already reaching 4.2 million euros since its release on August 26.

Closing the national representation is Cronos, in its fifth weekend on the marquee, with 37,700 euros in fourteenth place and close to reaching two million euros in its commercial run.
