Actor John Cho has once again brought up one of the most talked-about, never-realized projects in recent science fiction: the Star Trek film that Quentin Tarantino once envisioned as an adult movie, rated R, with a tone close to that of his own crime film classics.
The topic has resurfaced after Cho, who played Hikaru Sulu in the film series launched in 2009 by J.J. Abrams, spoke openly about how badly he wanted to be part of that project, despite not knowing all of its details.

For several years, the possible Tarantino Star Trek was one of those Hollywood projects that circulated between rumors and anticipation without ever materializing. The director had pitched the idea to J.J. Abrams, and screenwriter Mark L. Smith, known for his work on The Revenant, went as far as writing a script based on that premise.
There was even talk of turning it into the first major R-rated Star Trek film, a notable departure from the franchise's usual tone in theaters.
In an interview with Variety, John Cho admitted that his knowledge of the project was limited. As he explained, his co-star Simon Pegg had much more access to what was happening behind the scenes.
