Netflix has confirmed that Jennifer Coolidge will return as Karen Calhoun in the second season of The Watcher, reprising her role as the opportunistic real estate agent who sold the Brannock family their dream home, which later turned into a nightmare.
The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress joins the four cast members whose return Netflix confirmed last week: Naomi Watts (Nora Brannock), Bobby Cannavale (Dean Brannock), Margo Martindale (Maureen Mo), and Isabel Gravitt (Ellie Brannock). Production for the new season will begin this fall in New York.
The announcement marks a notable turn for a series that, for a long time, seemed to be stuck in renewal limbo. Netflix ordered the second season in November 2022, alongside more installments of Monster, but the project then went quiet, to the point that Ryan Murphy had confirmed the series would not return in 2024. Earlier this month, it was reported that production was finally on track, and within 24 hours, Netflix confirmed that the Brannocks would return, effectively ruling out the theory that the second season would follow an anthology format.
Why Karen’s return matters
Of all the characters from the first season, Karen Calhoun was perhaps the one with the most unfinished business. After convincing the Brannocks to overpay for the house at 657 Boulevard, she ended the season as the owner of the house herself, becoming a victim of the same paranoia she had previously profited from.
Jennifer Coolidge had expressed interest in revisiting the character. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly shortly after the second season renewal was announced, the actress stated that she felt Karen needed to be punished for what happened in the first installment. Four years later, it seems she might get her wish.
Since she was last seen in Westfield, Coolidge's career has continued to soar. The actress won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her role in The White Lotus, and most recently appeared in A Minecraft Movie, making her return to The Watcher a major casting win for Netflix.
