Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will return to infiltrate a high school in 24 Jump Street, the third installment of the comedy franchise that has been on hiatus for over a decade. Sony Pictures has already confirmed a release date, but the choice has caused surprise: the film will arrive just one week before one of Marvel Studios' biggest releases in the coming years.
The news is particularly relevant now because it places a direct clash between two very different types of cinema on the calendar for late 2027, in a context where major studios usually avoid competing head-to-head with Marvel during the holiday season.
Sony confirms the return of Jenko and Schmidt
As confirmed by Sony Pictures, 24 Jump Street will hit theaters on December 10, 2027. The film will mark the saga's return after more than ten years of silence since the release of 22 Jump Street in 2014.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will reprise their roles as undercover agents Greg Jenko and Morton Schmidt, the protagonists who turned this franchise into one of the best-rated comedies of their generation. Ice Cube will also return as Captain Dickson, a superior who is always at the limit of his patience with his two star agents.
A date very close to Avengers: Secret Wars
The problem, for some sectors of the industry, lies in what happens just seven days after the comedy's release. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, according to the current Marvel Studios calendar.
This is no ordinary release. Secret Wars is set to conclude the so-called Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it one of the most anticipated films of the coming years and, predictably, a box office phenomenon capable of monopolizing theaters and media attention for much of December.
Placing a comedy like 24 Jump Street right before such a production is, to say the least, a bold bet by Sony.
Counter-programming or unnecessary risk?
The advantage of 24 Jump Street is that it competes in a completely different arena than Marvel's blockbusters. It is a comedy aimed at a teenage and adult audience, with a much more modest budget and box office expectations than any Avengers film.
Facing a release the size of Secret Wars, offering something lighter and self-aware could work as a counter-programming strategy, taking advantage of an audience looking for alternatives once the big Marvel event has been satisfied. Even so, the limited seven-day window of exclusivity before the big holiday release arrives remains an obvious risk.
Channing Tatum, star on both sides of the poster
The coincidence of dates is especially curious in the case of Channing Tatum, who is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, a character he had been trying to bring to the big screen in a solo film for years.
Tatum will reprise his role as Remy LeBeau in Avengers: Doomsday, where he will share the screen with historic faces from the Fox-era X-Men, including Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The promotional material known so far suggests that Gambit will have a role of some relevance in that story.
If that arc extends to Secret Wars, Tatum could experience an unusual situation: starring in 24 Jump Street and, just a week later, appearing in one of the most important Marvel Studios releases during that same December.
A December 2027 packed with major releases
The trend of avoiding competition with Marvel, Star Wars, or Avatar during the holiday season seems to be changing. Warner Bros. plans to release Dune: Part Three on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday, while another major production will arrive shortly after, also during the holidays.
Everything points to late 2027 becoming a true battlefield between major franchises, with several heavy-hitting releases concentrated in just a few weeks.
In the case of 24 Jump Street, its strength does not lie in competing directly with Marvel at the box office, but in maintaining the tone that made its first two installments a success: the ability to laugh at sequels, Hollywood, and its own clichés. If the third film retains that spirit, it could find its own space even with Secret Wars looming on the calendar.
On the other hand, conflicting reports have circulated in recent months regarding the production status of Secret Wars, which has fueled rumors of a possible delay. For now, those speculations have not changed the official calendar, which keeps both releases separated by only seven days.
After more than a decade of waiting for the return of Jenko and Schmidt, Sony has decided to launch them practically against the Avengers. Being a Jump Street film, it wouldn't be strange if the movie itself ended up joking about how risky this date is.
