The upcoming historical drama Sword & Silence has revealed new images of its leads Lee Hyun Wook, Kim Kang Woo, and Park Sung Woong, who bring to life three pivotal figures in the unification of the Three Kingdoms of ancient Korea.
The series is directed by Kim Yeong Jo, known for Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, and chronicles how the small kingdom of Silla managed to overcome the more powerful Goguryeo and Baekje, as well as China's Tang dynasty, to achieve the unification of the Three Kingdoms.
Three central figures in the plot of Sword & Silence
The narrative core of Sword & Silence revolves around the relationships between three characters: Kim Pom Min, played by Lee Hyun Wook; Kim Chun Chu, played by Kim Kang Woo; and Kim Yu Shin, portrayed by Park Sung Woong.
Kim Pom Min is the eldest son of Kim Chun Chu, who ruled Silla as King Taejong Muyeol, the kingdom's 29th monarch. He is described as a perceptive man with a sharp intellect and deep political instincts. Alongside his maternal uncle Kim Yu Shin, he participates in numerous battles that allow him to develop his courage and leadership skills as a military commander.
For his part, Kim Chun Chu is the grandson of the deposed King Jinji, while Kim Yu Shin comes from the Gaya lineage. The three characters join forces for the future of their kingdom despite strong opposition from Silla's Jingol aristocracy.
The conflict between father and son
According to the synopsis, Kim Pom Min initially clashes with his father, as he considers Kim Chun Chu's pragmatic approach to diplomacy cowardly. However, both eventually share the goal of achieving peace through the unification of the Three Kingdoms, a path that places Kim Pom Min on the road to leadership.
The alliance between Kim Chun Chu and Kim Yu Shin
Kim Chun Chu and Kim Yu Shin act as partners united by both blood ties and political trust. Kim Chun Chu marries Kim Yu Shin's younger sister, making them brothers-in-law with a very close relationship.
The two characters display a nearly perfect division of responsibilities: Kim Chun Chu lays the foundations for the political project thanks to his diplomatic skill, while Kim Yu Shin remains firmly loyal, quelling internal rebellions and fighting on the battlefield to ensure victory.
