Marvel Studios has taken an unexpected turn in its television plans. Amid a wave of project cancellations for the small screen, the company surprised New York Comic-Con attendees with the announcement of a new exclusive series for Disney+: Zodiac.
The announcement comes at a key moment for Phase 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is undergoing a visible restructuring of its television strategy. The fact that the company is betting on a new project, shrouded in secrecy, is particularly striking for fans and followers of the studio.
A logo full of clues
For now, there are no official details regarding the cast or which Marvel characters or licenses will be involved in the plot. The only thing confirmed is that it will be a thriller focused on exploring deep secrets of the Marvel universe.
The logo presented during the event includes two elements that have sparked speculation: the ARC reactor associated with Iron Man and the SHIELD eagle emblem. Both symbols suggest that the plot could have direct ties to the legacy of Tony Stark or the most well-known espionage organization in the MCU.
Statements from the executive producer
Brad Winderbaum, executive producer of Marvel Television, explained that no cast names have been revealed because they would spoil the plot. According to him, many of the series' secrets are already hinted at in the logo itself presented at the event.
Winderbaum also acknowledged that the mystery will not be maintained for long, as once filming begins, it will be more difficult to keep information about characters and the plot hidden.
Possible connections to Armor Wars and SHIELD
The presence of the ARC reactor in the logo has revived the theory that Zodiac could be the way Marvel revisits Armor Wars, the canceled series that was to star Don Cheadle and intended to delve into Tony Stark's legacy after Avengers: Endgame.
On the other hand, the SHIELD symbol opens the door to a possible return of the organization to the MCU, and even a sort of reboot linked to the spirit of Agents of SHIELD, a series that aired for seven seasons on ABC.
What is Zodiac in the comics?
The name Zodiac has little relevant presence in original Marvel material. In the comics, there has been a villain by that name who faced the Thunderbolts and Moon Knight in 2009, in addition to different versions of a group of supervillains who also adopted that identity against various Avengers lineups.
None of these versions had enough prominence to sustain a full series, which leaves open the possibility that Marvel Studios is preparing an original story, not based directly on the comics, as has already happened with other recent projects from the studio.
Filming and release date
Filming for Zodiac will begin in London next spring. The release date projected by Marvel Studios is 2028, so there is still a long way to go before the public can learn the full details of the plot and its cast.
