Extraction 3 wraps filming in Thailand ahead of a key year for the Netflix saga

Chris Hemsworth has bid farewell to Thailand via Instagram, confirming that filming for Extraction 3 has come to an end. The news marks the conclusion of a production process that has spanned years and now opens the door to what could be the most intense period in the history of the franchise on Netflix, with up to three Extraction titles planned for 2027.

The formal announcement from Netflix and AGBO has not yet arrived, but between the actor's post and the production schedule that has been followed, everything points to filming having concluded exactly as planned.

Hemsworth confirms the end of filming in Thailand

On October 28, 2026, Hemsworth posted a carousel of photos on Instagram taken in Thailand during his days off, showing him diving, fishing, boxing, and visiting temples with his children. In the caption, he wrote: Finishing up my time in Thailand. Crazy few weeks of filming Extraction 3 but managed to fill the weekends with some fun non work adventures too!

Netflix and AGBO have not yet released an official statement regarding the wrap, as they did in March 2026 with the Korean spin-off Tygo. However, the production schedules that had been followed placed filming between late July and late October 2026, split between Sydney, New South Wales, and Thailand, with an estimated budget of between $50 and $100 million. The date of Hemsworth's farewell fits exactly with the end of that filming window.

The Thai leg was no secret. Hemsworth had been posting content from the country for much of October, starting with a Muay Thai training session in Bangkok alongside his regular trainer, Jack Boonsanong, on October 7, where he confirmed he was filming Extraction 3 in Thailand.

On October 19, ONE Championship Muay Thai legend Rodtang Jitmuangnon visited the set in Ratchaburi. Hemsworth thanked him for a pair of custom gloves for his trophy room, while Rodtang shared a video hugging the actor on set. Ratchaburi was actually one of the locations for the first Extraction in 2018, where the city of Dhaka was recreated.

Before Thailand, most of the filming took place in Sydney and the South Coast of New South Wales, starting in July, with the support of the Australian Government's Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund. It is estimated that the production generated around 450 local jobs. In August, several set photos taken at a luxury hotel in Sydney Harbour showed Hemsworth, Idris Elba, and franchise newcomer Pierce Brosnan filming a shootout scene that escalated into hand-to-hand combat.

Confirmed cast of Extraction 3

Sam Hargrave returns as director for the third consecutive time, working from a script by David Weil (Citadel, Hunters), who takes over writing duties from Joe Russo. The Russo brothers continue as producers through AGBO, alongside Hemsworth's Wild State label. The film is once again based on the graphic novel Ciudad, by Ande Parks, the Russos themselves, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman.

The cast confirmed so far includes:

  • Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake
  • Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan, the operations manager and Rake's closest ally
  • Idris Elba as Alcott, the operative who helped rescue Rake and Nik at the end of Extraction 2
  • Pierce Brosnan (MobLand), in a role yet to be disclosed
  • Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, as Tygo, the former child soldier turned mercenary who stars in his own spin-off
  • Joe Taslim (The Raid, Mortal Kombat)
  • Chi Lewis-Parry (Samson in 28 Years Later)
  • Siena Agudong (upcoming in Prime Video's Carrie)

No plot details have been revealed yet. It is likely that this information will remain under wraps until Netflix decides to share an official first look, which could coincide with TUDUM or the presentation of its 2027 catalog.

When will Extraction 3 arrive on Netflix

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the film. However, Hargrave noted last year that the goal was to release it in 2027, and nothing in the production schedule contradicts that forecast.

The clearest precedent is Extraction 2, which finished filming in March 2022 and arrived on Netflix in June 2023, that is, 15 months later. If that same margin were applied to a shoot that concluded in October 2026, the release would fall in late 2027 or early 2028. Even so, the post-production of the second installment was unusually long, and Netflix has every incentive to return its most powerful action franchise to the platform as soon as possible. The most reasonable forecast places the release in the second half of 2027.

The bar is set high: the first Extraction remains one of the most-watched original films in Netflix history, and Extraction 2 topped the global charts in June 2023.

Three Extraction titles expected in 2027

Extraction 3 is not coming alone. For the first time, the mercenary universe created by the Russo brothers expands beyond Tyler Rake, and the three projects that were underway have already finished filming and are in post-production.

Mercenary: An Extraction Series

This is the first television foray for the franchise. Omar Sy leads the cast as Kalidou Diallo, a mercenary who must navigate warring factions in Libya to rescue a group of hostages. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) created this eight-episode series, which also features Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, May Calamawy, and Ed Speleers. Filming began in Ireland in September 2025, moved to Morocco in December, and concluded in March 2026. Given the post-production time it has, it is the title most likely to arrive before the other two, probably in the first half of 2027.

Tygo

This is the Korean spin-off first reported in October 2025. Don Lee returns as Tygo, who embarks on a revenge mission through the Korean criminal underworld after an operation goes wrong. Lee Jin-wook (Squid Game), Lisa from BLACKPINK, and Maxim Baldry round out the cast, under the direction of Lee Sang-yong (The Roundup). AGBO confirmed the end of filming in March 2026, and the film has not yet appeared in any of Netflix's 2026 date announcements, so it is expected to be part of the 2027 catalog. The fact that Don Lee also plays Tygo in Extraction 3 suggests that both productions will be directly connected.
