HBO casts Charlie Weasley for the Harry Potter series: meet the brother the films never showed

The Harry Potter television adaptation being prepared by HBO continues to expand its cast, and the latest announcement corrects one of the most discussed absences by fans of the books. The platform has confirmed that Harry Gilby will play Charlie Weasley, a character who exists in J. K. Rowling's novels but never appeared in the original eight films.

The announcement comes at a time when the series has already generated anticipation for its stated goal: to offer a more faithful and detailed portrait of the saga than the cinematic format allowed. Alongside Gilby, HBO has also confirmed Jasper Talbot as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter, the protagonist's parents.

Who is Charlie Weasley and why did the films leave him out?

For those who only know the saga through the films, the name Charlie Weasley may be completely unknown. However, in the books, he is the second son of Arthur and Molly Weasley, positioned between Bill and Percy in the order of the seven siblings.

His name is mentioned for the first time in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, although his direct appearance in the plot does not arrive until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Unlike his brothers, Charlie builds his life far from Hogwarts: he works with dragons in Romania, a profession that gains narrative relevance on more than one occasion, including Hagrid's famous decision to raise a dragon in his own hut.

The character is not limited to a one-off appearance. He also participates in key events of the saga, such as the final Battle of Hogwarts, which makes his absence from the films one of the most striking omissions for readers.

James and Lily Potter, the other confirmed cast members

HBO's announcement is not limited to Charlie Weasley. Jasper Talbot will play James Potter and Hannah Chinn will play Lily Potter, Harry's parents. Both characters die before the main story begins, but their sacrifice is the event that sets the entire plot in motion.

In the original films, James and Lily only appeared through flashbacks and occasional references. The new series has the opportunity to dedicate more narrative time to them, although it has not yet been detailed how exactly these characters will be integrated into the first episodes.

A series that seeks to recover what the films could not include

The casting of Charlie Weasley adds to a strategy that was already hinted at in previous announcements. HBO had previously confirmed Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, in charge of History of Magic, another character practically non-existent in the films.

Among the names from the books that the films left aside are also Peeves, the poltergeist who causes quite a few problems at Hogwarts, and Nicolas Flamel along with his wife Perenelle, whose presence was notably reduced in the film adaptation.

Eight episodes for a single novel

The change in format explains a good part of these decisions. The films had to condense seven novels into eight feature films, which forced the sacrifice of subplots and secondary characters to maintain a cinematic pace.

The new series proposes a different approach: the first season, dedicated entirely to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, will have eight episodes. That additional time allows for developing family relationships and characters that were previously relegated to the background with more ease.

Cast and release date of the Harry Potter series

The first season is titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.

The protagonist will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, accompanied by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

Among the adult cast, John Lithgow stands out as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner writes the script and serves as executive producer of the series, while Mark Mylod is in charge of directing several episodes.

With Charlie Weasley added to the cast, the Weasley family begins to gain the presence they always had in the books. It remains to be seen if HBO takes advantage of this narrative margin to give space to other stories that the films had to leave behind.
