The South Korean network SBS has shared the first teaser for the premiere episode of Doctor X, its new medical production arriving on screens on October 9.
The series is based on the hit Japanese drama of the same name and features Kim Ji Won in the role of Gye Soo Jung, a brilliant surgeon who demonstrates what it truly means to be a doctor through her pure surgical talent, while operating both literally and figuratively on an institution corrupted from within.
What the new Doctor X teaser shows
The newly released teaser begins with Gye Soo Jung entering the operating room. Later, surgical intern Park Tae Kyung, played by Kim Woo Seok, crosses paths with her outside the hospital and asks her name. Instead of answering with words, she traces a large X with her finger.
After arriving at Guseo University Hospital, Gye Soo Jung maintains that same bold and defiant attitude within the facilities. Standing before the medical staff gathered in the auditorium, she openly questions a case: "Why are you performing a laparotomy [on this patient]?". Shortly after, she firmly refuses another person: "I'm not going to do any of that".
A hospital unsettled by the new surgeon
The arrival of this blunt newcomer unsettles the rest of the medical staff, who fear she might "shake the foundations of everything" they have built so far. In one scene, Park Tae Kyung is left alone in the operating room and shouts in desperation: "What are we supposed to do if everyone leaves? There's no one here!".
For his part, Boo Seung Kwon, the hospital director played by Son Hyun Joo, refers to her with disdain as "just a tail that can be cut off," making clear the power struggle looming between the protagonist and the medical center's hierarchy.
The teaser closes with the appearance of Jang Hee Sook, played by Lee Jung Eun, who runs the medical staffing agency that sent Gye Soo Jung to the hospital. Jang Hee Sook describes her as "our agency's best card," reinforcing the protagonist's reputation even before the series begins.
