Three couples, three stories
Joe Port explained at San Diego Comic-Con that "the show is about three different relationships," as reported by Tell-Tale TV on August 11, 2026. The first is Charles and Liz, the marriage on the brink of collapse. Then there is Jesse and Phyllis. He is a young vampire and she is his human wife, who is aging and must have her memory wiped periodically. Finally, Emma and Max: the vampire who falls in love with a human.Port added that Jesse and Phyllis are, despite appearances, "probably our healthiest couple." For his part, Wiseman said the series will tell how Jesse became a vampire. The version Jesse believes, he warned, "is not the truth."
Vampire rules in the series
Charles and Liz no longer hunt humans. They have blood delivered and drink it at the family table, according to TV Insider. Vampires have various powers, though not all the same ones. Wiseman detailed that "the most common are super speed and super strength." Furthermore, they are offended by stereotypes: immunity to garlic is debated in the pilot itself.

Port and Wiseman wrote the pilot eleven years ago and no one bought it then, Port said at Comic-Con. CBS opened a development room in early 2025 and ordered the pilot on July 24, 2025, according to TVLine. On April 9, 2026, the network confirmed the series for the 2026-2027 season. That same day, it scrapped The Tillbrooks, the multi-camera comedy starring Kate Walsh and Rhys Darby.The first episode was screened at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2026, in Ballroom 20, following the Ghosts panel.
