Why Do Some People Remember Their Dreams in Detail While Others Forget Them Upon Waking?

Some people remember their dreams in detail because during the rapid eye movement (REM) phase, the brain shows increased activity in areas such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, regions linked to memory consolidation.

Upon waking, if the person gets up quickly or interrupts sleep during a lighter stage, the dream memory is more likely to be retained in short-term memory. On the other hand, if sleep is interrupted during a deep phase, the brain tends to erase that information before it can be transferred to long-term memory.

Factors That Influence Dream Recall

  • Personality: people who are open to experience or have a strong tendency toward introspection tend to remember their dreams more.
  • Sleep habits: sleeping more hours increases the likelihood of entering several REM cycles, providing more opportunities to remember.
  • Substance use: alcohol or certain medications can reduce REM activity and, therefore, diminish the ability to recall dreams.
  • External stimuli: noises, lights, or abrupt awakenings at the end of a REM phase can facilitate immediate recall.

In addition, the practice of keeping a dream journal and describing dreams as soon as one opens their eyes trains the brain to pay more attention to these experiences, which reinforces the retention of dream content.
