Why are diamonds and graphite made of the same thing but are opposites?

Both are pure carbon, but with different crystal structures (allotropes). Diamond forms a hyper-resistant three-dimensional $sp^3$ tetrahedral network, while graphite forms hexagonal $sp^2$ sheets joined by weak bonds.
