How does classical physics explain the principle of conservation of linear momentum?

It derives directly from Newton's third law. If two objects interact within an isolated system, the force exerted by the first on the second is equal and opposite to that exerted by the second on the first, causing the total sum of their linear momenta to remain constant over time.
