Atresmedia Cine has once again shown its weight in the Spanish audiovisual industry. The production company presented its 2026 results and its release plan for the coming months at the San Sebastián Film Festival, confirming a leadership position it has held for several years in the country's cinemas.
The reason this announcement carries particular significance now is twofold: on one hand, the company achieved its best-ever market share in 2026; on the other, it has unveiled a 2027 release catalogue that combines comedy, thriller and auteur cinema, expanding its bets beyond the family comedy that has driven its success.
A historic year at the box office in 2026
Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano, general director of Atresmedia Cine, presented the company's figures during the traditional event the production company organizes each year as part of the San Sebastián festival. According to the data presented, Atresmedia Cine has sold more than 60 million tickets so far in 2026 and holds a market share of over 50% within Spanish cinema.
This figure is especially significant considering that four of the ten highest-grossing Spanish films of the year belong to the Antena 3 production company, and all of them share the same genre: family comedy.
Torrente Presidente, the year’s big phenomenon
The film drawing all the attention is Torrente Presidente, directed by Santiago Segura. The movie has achieved the best opening for a Spanish title in the last eleven years and has become the fourth highest-grossing Spanish film in history, with more than 28 million euros in box office revenue and 3.8 million viewers.
Other family comedies round out the year's top hits. Abuela tremenda, directed by Ana Vázquez, ranks fifth with 2.8 million euros, while La familia Benetón +2, directed by Joaquín Mazón, sits in seventh place with 2.6 million. Haciendo amigos, directed by David Marqués, closes out the top 10 with nearly two million euros, and Tres de más, directed by Mar Olid, comes close to one and a half million euros in eleventh place.
Not everything was a success
The production company also acknowledged the titles with the poorest commercial performance in 2026. La Fiera, directed by Salvador Calvo, fell short of 900,000 euros; Viaje al país de los blancos, directed by Dani Sancho, stopped at 762,000 euros; Cada día nace un listo, directed by Arantxa Echevarría, at 280,000 euros; A fuego, directed by Estel Díaz, at 65,500 euros; and Todos los colores, directed by Beatriz de Silva, barely surpassed 9,000 euros.
In total, Atresmedia Cine released ten titles in Spanish cinemas throughout 2026. This leadership is nothing new: in 2025 the company drew more than 3.5 million viewers, with Padre no hay más que uno 5, also directed by Santiago Segura, as the most-watched Spanish film of the year, with two million viewers.
Beyond family comedy
Despite the figures that establish comedy as the star genre, Atresmedia Cine wanted to highlight the diversity of its upcoming catalogue. Several of its next releases had a notable presence at San Sebastián this year.
La bola negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, arrives in cinemas on September 25 following its run in the Perlak section. The film, a Movistar Plus original, has been chosen to represent Spain at the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category and came off a triumphant run at the Toronto Film Festival.
Las ciegas hormigas, directed by Igor Legarreta, is the first Basque-language film produced by Atresmedia Cine and will premiere on October 9. Karateka, directed by Aritz Moreno and starring Andrea Ros and Patrick Criado, will hit theaters on October 30 and is shaping up to be the production company's main commercial bet for the fall. Meanwhile, El mal padre, directed by Roberto Bueso, is competing for the Golden Shell and will premiere on November 20.
Television fiction bets
Atresmedia also brought two of its major series to San Sebastián: Sira, a continuation of El tiempo entre costuras starring Adriana Ugarte, and Trazos ocultos, an emotional thriller with Toni Acosta and Rodolfo Sancho. Both productions will premiere first on atresplayer before airing during Antena 3's prime time.
The 2027 release calendar
The production company also showed previously unseen footage from its upcoming releases. El confidente, directed by Daniel Calparsoro and starring Javier Gutiérrez and Miguel Herrán, inspired by real events, will arrive in cinemas on January 29, 2027.
La Roja, directed by Marcel Barrena, with Paco León, Atul Vijayakumar and Carolina Yuste, will premiere on March 19. Caza mayor, directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo and starring Antonio de la Torre, will debut on April 23.
Caer de pie, the new film from Salvador Calvo starring Marina Salas, will arrive on May 28. And Todo por la casa, a romantic comedy by María Togores with Silvia Alonso and Alejandro García, will premiere on August 6.
Other titles planned for 2027 without a confirmed date include A morte nos teus ollos, directed by Guillermo de Oliveira; El profesor, directed by Daniel Castro, with Javier Gutiérrez; Matar a Ramón, a comedy by Álvaro Fernández Armero; Entre olas, by Chloé Wallace; and La dona invisible, by Cristina Fernández Pintado.
Upcoming productions
Atresmedia Cine also revealed several of the productions it will undertake in the coming months. This winter will see the start of filming for Casa en cendres, the sequel to the successful comedy Casa en llamas, with Dani de la Orden once again directing and Eduard Sola writing the screenplay. Emma Vilarasau and Alberto San Juan will reprise their roles as leads.
Santiago Segura is already working on his next project with backing from Atresmedia Cine. Arantxa Echevarría, for her part, will adapt the novel No somos parte del mundo, by Soraya Nárez, with Eduard Fernández in the cast, with filming expected in a month and a half.
Daniel Calparsoro will team up again with the production company and Bowfinger on Hades, a thriller about drug trafficking that will be filmed in the spring. Manuel Martín Cuenca will adapt La noche de piedra, by Alexis Ravelo, with Javier Gutiérrez in one of the lead roles, also with filming planned for next spring. Overall, Atresmedia Cine expects to be involved in more than ten productions throughout 2026.
