What is mechanical work ($W$) in classical physics, and in what units is it measured?

It is the scalar product of the force vector applied to a body and the displacement vector performed: $W = vec{F} cdot Delta vec{r}$. In the International System, it is measured in Joules ($J = N cdot m$).
