Prolonged exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF), such as those emitted by power grids, household appliances or high-voltage lines, has been the subject of study for its possible health effects. Although current scientific evidence does not confirm a serious risk for most of the population, certain studies suggest associations between high levels of exposure and conditions such as sleep disorders, oxidative stress, or a slightly increased risk of childhood leukemia in extreme cases.
ELF fields affect the body through mechanisms such as interference with cellular activity or disruption of biochemical processes. However, the severity depends on factors such as the intensity of the field, proximity to the source, and duration of exposure. For example, living near high-voltage power lines for years could represent a marginally higher risk than that of the general population, but health authorities such as the WHO do not classify it as a carcinogen due to the lack of conclusive data.
To minimize risks, it is recommended to keep a distance from intense sources where possible, although everyday use of electronic devices does not represent a proven danger. Research continues in order to establish more precise safety limits and better understand chronic effects, especially in vulnerable populations such as children or people with weakened immune systems.
